Book: From the Street to the Stars: Andy Nebula, Interstellar Rockstar - Book One

From the Street to the Stars is not my first Edward Willett book. Odds are it won’t be my last, as Willett is constantly publishing (that is a bonus for those of us who love reading the tales that come out of his super-imaginative mind.) Like his other works, this one doesn’t disappoint. It is filled with prose that draws you right in while the characters and plot keep you glued to every page.

While From the Street to the Stars is geared for young adults and I’m approaching middle age, I loved Kit’s story. The tale of a teenager turned rockstar would’ve been enough to keep me sucked in yet Willett takes the plot several exciting steps further. He adds in spaceships, aliens, interplanetary travel, and a few other galactic surprises. While that could’ve turned cheesy fast, in this case it added fabulous layers to the story. New depths are created, especially with the kooky aliens. It was a thrill ride to go along with the cast of quirky characters on their adventures.

One of the highlights of From the Street to the Stars was when Willett introduced the concept of time pockets, “self-contained regions of alternity in which time passes differently. Objects or animals placed in one appear to age in minutes instead of weeks or years.” Kit’s manager convinces him to take the drug that leads to time pockets and the story takes an even more interesting turn after that.

I reached out to Regina-based Willett to get the scoop on this series. Since it says Book One in the title, I assumed there would be more of Kit’s story to follow. But we know what happens when we make assumptions so I went to the source. It turns out there is a second book in the series that is available now on ebook. Willett assured me that a print edition of the second book will be available eventually (for those of us who love a tangible hard copy) although that will likely happen later this year or in early 2024. As for whether there will be additional books after book two, Andy Nebula: Double Trouble, Willett clarified, “I have plots for several more books in the series, but I can’t say for sure if I’ll write them . . . so I won’t promise the series will continue.”

Just to keep things straight, this book was originally published in 1999 and this new edition is a republication by Shadowpaw Press. Snag yourself a copy of From the Street to the Stars if you are in the mood for a fun sci-fi book with a zany ensemble.
