Chinook School Division Sports Report

SWAC teams are ready to get back to competition after the February break. Curling championships and basketball league playoffs will be in full swing. Chinook has removed all spectator limits, and SWAC is excited to welcome all our school sport fans to come support our teams.

Curling:

Qualifying junior and senior curling teams will be busy on the March 4/5 weekend. The Junior SWAC Championship will be held in Fox Valley. Draws have been posted on SWACSports Facebook/Instagram/Twitter.

The following junior section qualifying teams will compete:

  • Open: Eastend, Val Marie, SCCHS, Ponteix, Maple Creek, Hazlet

  • Girls: Ecole Centennial, Leader, Maple Creek, Fox Valley

  • Boys: Gull Lake, Ecole Centennial, Maple Creek, Fox Valley

Our SWAC Senior Curling teams: SCCHS mixed (Declan Poppy, Raechel Schlechter, JJ Zummack, Ty Kornfeld, Coach: Ron Bailey), Hazlet mixed (Andra Todd, Ian Baumann, Vanessa Flynn-Barr, Braden Baumann, Coaches Tarryl Todd/Kerri Keenleyside), SCCHS boys (Ethan Robinson, Riley Starkey, Rohne Foster, Austin Evans, Sean Friense, Coach Ron Bailey) and the Fox Valley girls (Mikayla Herter, Rory Schneider, Brooklyn Schell, Haley Anton, Coach Kalin Deis) will be competing at the SHSAA Regional competition held on March 4 and 5 in Swift Current.

Top teams from the SHSAA Regional curling advance to the SHSAA Provincial Championship on March 11/12. Swift Current is hosting the boy and mixed provincial championship and Fox Valley is hosting the provincial girl championship.

Basketball:

Tuesday, March 1 the Maple Creek girls and boys will be in Swift Current. The Shaunavon girls will go back to SC to play the Jr Ardens on March 2. There is still one make-up game between Shaunavon and Maple Creek girls to be scheduled. The girls and boys league finals (#2 at #1) are scheduled for Tuesday, March 8.

Junior boy basketball league layoffs will begin right after the break. Maple Creek (#2) will host Shaunavon (#3) in the league semifinal on Tuesday, March 1. SCCHS grade 9 will host the winner of the semifinal for the league championship on Thursday, March 3.

Senior basketball playoffs will be soon starting their run at Sask High School Athletic Association (SHSAA) Provincial Championships. The SHSAA has assign our SWAC basketball teams to conference playoffs in their enrolment classifications (March 11/12)

2A Gull Lake boys and Herbert boys will be in Regina. 3A Maple Creek boys and Shaunavon boys will play in Shaunavon. 1A Herbert girls will host a conference playoff. 3A Maple Creek girls and Shaunavon girls will be in Rosetown.

There are some SWAC basketball teams advancing straight to Regionals on March 18/19. 5A Swift Current Sr Colts are headed to Prince Albert. 5A Swift Current Sr Ardens will host Rural Regionals. 1A Vanguard boys will go to a regional competition (site TBD).
