What a busy curling weekend in the SouthWest. Thank you to the Fox Valley Curling Club and the Swift Current Curling Club for giving SWAC access to your facilities. The weekend of March 11/12 will also be very busy for our senior teams–Provincial Curling, Provincial Wrestling and Conference basketball are all taking place.

Curling:

The Junior SWAC Championship were held in Fox Valley. Gull Lake (Tyler Lamarie, Zach Dysart, Lucas McMillan, Trusten Kirwin, Cohen Harthwaite, coach Jackie Andrew/Amy Dysart) won the boys event. Fox Valley (Kierra Herter, Grace Bosch, Kelsey Hoffart, Amara Weise, coach James Deis) won the girls event and SCCHS Gr 9 (Aryn Thibault, Shane Cornelson, Emily Phan, coach Mark Tollefson) won the mixed event.

Our qualifying SWAC Senior Curling teams took part in the SHSAA Regional competition held on March 4 and 5 in Swift Current. Hazlet mixed (Andra Todd, Ian Baumann, Vanessa Flynn-Barr, Braden Baumann, Coaches Tarryl Todd/Kerri Keenleyside), lost their first draw against Moose Jaw Peacock and SC Mixed (Declan Poppy, Raechel Schlechter, JJ Zummack, Ty Kornfeld, Coach: Jeff Chambers) lost to Avonlea. That dropped both mixed teams to the “B” side of the draw. Our two South West teams met up in the B side quarter final. SCCHS took the win and Hazlet was eliminated from the competition. The SC mixed team then went on to beat Regina Campbell and Moose Jaw Peacock to claim the B side and advance to Provincials.

The Fox Valley Senior girls (Mikayla Herter, Rory Schneider, Brooklyn Schell, Haley Anton, Coach Steve Anton) also had to go through the B side to qualify for provincials. They lost to Moose Jaw Vanier on Friday but rebounded to beat Regina Winston Knoll and Moose Jaw Vanier to earn a Provincial berth.

The SCCHS boys’ team (Ethan Robinson, Riley Starkey, Rohne Foster, Austin Evans, Sean Friense, Coach Ron Bailey) took the A side and have a qualifying spot for Provincials. They had a bye in the first round, defeated Regina LeBoldus and then Moose Jaw Vanier to win the top spot at Regionals.
