Chinook School Sports Report March 26

By Valerie Gordon

With the weather warming up and spring on its way, it’s fitting that the final SHSAA provincial championship for winter sports took place this weekend.

Regina was the host site for the 5A basketball provincial tournament. The SCCHS Ardens, fresh off of winning the Rural Regional tournament, were SWAC’s lone team at basketball provincials. The Ardens would be playing against the top teams from Regina and Saskatoon.

Their first game was probably the most exciting game of the entire Hoopla weekend (in any classification). Down double digits in the first half vs Saskatoon Centennial, the Ardens played an excellent second half and stormed back to tie the game at the end of regulation. In the overtime period, the score remained tied at 67 with 21 seconds left. The teams traded foul shots/baskets in the closing seconds. With 2 seconds on the clock, MacKenzie McIntrye went to the line with the Ardens down 68-69. She sank her first shot to tie the game, her second shot rimmed out, but Veda Gosselig was there to grab the offensive rebound and score a basket just as time ran out Ardens won 71-69.

The big win put the SC team into the semi final vs Regina Campbell. Regina was just too strong for the Ardens, and they lost 47-77. Relegated to the Bronze Medal game against Regina Riffel, the Ardens played their hearts out trying to win a medal. Swift Current dominated the first quarter and Riffel dominated the second quarter. The second half of the game was back and forth. With just over 20 seconds left in the game, the Ardens were down 3 points. Even though they had 3 possessions in the final seconds, the SC Ardens just couldn't get the ball to drop and eventually lost 66-70. To be Rural Regional champions and finish 4th in the province in 5A basketball is quite an accomplishment for the SCCHS Ardens.
