Ken Plaquin out as Head Coach of SJHL Klippers

The Head Coach and General Manager of the SJHL Kindersley Iron Horse Klippers is no longer with the organization.

The Klippers announced in a February 22, 2023 release that they had “parted ways” with Plaquin, who was with the team for three seasons.

The news comes following a season that’s left the Klippers out of playoff contention and sitting last place in the SJHL standings.

Assistant Coach Tyler Traptow has been named the interim Head Coach and General Manager.

“It’s just a tough situation. I have nothing but respect for Ken. He was really good to me, and gave me so many opportunities. I’ll forever be thankful for that,” he said.

“The Board made the decision it was time to move on. I’m grateful for an opportunity that will kickstart my coaching career. It’s a really good chance to just finish out the year.”

Traptow was familiar with the Klippers prior to becoming a coach, but under Plaquin’s tenure, he learned a lot.

“I played junior right here, and knew some of the ins and outs. But I was a green and fresh coach. Ken helped me learn the nuances, and everything he taught me was a huge help,” said Traptow.

“This has kickstarted my coaching career, and I’m grateful for that. I’ll try and implement little thing, and I’ll always remember what he showed me. I’m thankful.”

He said it took a bit for him to recognize the intensity of the situation.

“There’s some nervous excitement, this is a big thing. Not many people at 23 years of age are doing a job like this, even interim,” he said.

“I’m not about to make crazy changes, and the guys have all been good. I’ve been with them all year, and we’re comfortable. Let’s just see how we do the next few weeks.”

With the Klippers officially out of playoff contention, Traptow says it’s hard for the 20-year-olds aging out of the league.

“At this point, we can’t have any do-overs. We have reiterated to the team we need to find something to play for. We won’t be in the playoffs, but there are fans who watch and pay money,” he said.

“We have billets who’ve gone above and beyond, and parents who have spent countless hours with these guys at rinks. Last but not least, we need to play for our 20-year-olds.”

With Captain Brayden Koch, Aidan Bangs and Matthew Mazzochi leaving, the team will have talent to replace.

“We have eight games left. Those three guys leave a big hole to fill,” he said. “They lead by example, and have shown the guys what it takes to be in a leadership role.”

Traptow said everything at this point should be able simply playing for the pride of the team.

“We need to play for the Klippers organization and for our community. We need to show everything we will fight on the ice moving forward,” he said.

“The team needs to battle to win, and show the community this season isn’t our norm. We have to show the older players we appreciate what they’ve done, and give an honest effort.”
