Looking Back: Kindersley’s first fire brigade

The Kindersley history book noted the first fire brigade meeting was held on Tuesday, December 5, 1910, at which time the fire brigade was formed. Mr. Gutzmer was nominated Fire Chief.

February 1, 1934 was sited as the date of Kindersley’s most destructive fire in the history of the town, when the skating rink and curling rink were totally destroyed by fire. The fire began at approximately 11:40 p.m. on February 1st, and within an hour the building was burned to the ground with the exception of a small portion of the roof and the corners of the curling rink.

Council notes from March 1, 1948 included discussion about a large fire siren. Due to the increase in the size of the town, the fire brigade considered the present siren insufficient. It was decided by the council that a 3 h.p. Siren should be purchased to replace the 1 h.p. Siren. The town clerk was instructed to order the siren for immediate delivery.

The picture was taken in 1956, when Kindersley’s Fire Dept. had two new pumpers, one a Civil Defence and the other having just been purchased for the local department. Pictured are the local volunteer Fire Brigade, Mr. Phillips - the first Fire Chief, and members of the Town Council.
