Marengo Elevator Fire

The Providence Grain Solutions grain handling operation at Marengo has been destroyed after a massive fire at the elevator late Thursday, October 8.

Kindersley Fire and Rescue responded to the blaze at around 11:00 p.m. The Eatonia, Kerrobert, and Oyen fire departments also responded.

The village of Marengo and the surrounding rural municipality of Milton had to be evacuated after a state of emergency was declared.

The elevator serves a large portion of the west-central Saskatchewan and east-central Alberta. The company has other elevator locations at Fort Saskatchewan, Alta., Crossfield, Alta., Viking, Alta., Stoughton, Sask., and Winnipeg, Man.

According to the Canadian Grain Commission, the Marengo elevator had a licensed capacity of just under 28 thousand tonnes and is located on a CN rail line.

There’s been no word yet on the fire’s cause or where it started within the elevator.
