By Valerie Gordon
BASKETBALL LEAGUES
Maple Creek hosted the senior girls basketball league final vs SCCHS gr 9/10. Congrats to the Maple Creek senior girls who won the championship (76-38). Maple Creek top scorers were Sierra Frey (26 pts) and Savannah Frey (22 pts). The Swift Current top scorers were Elizabeth Metke (10 pts) and Ellizze Completo (8 pts).
Moose Jaw Basketball League
The SCCHS Senior Ardens hosted the league semi final last week, the defeated Moose Jaw Peacock 86-37. The Colts lost in the semifinal to Peacock (94-81). The league finals were scheduled for March 11, but have been canceled and won’t be rescheduled.
SHSAA Provincial senior basketball playoffs
A majority of our senior basketball teams were involved in the first level of SHSAA provincial playoffs on the weekend.
1A Herbert boys hosted a conference championship, they lost their opening game against Kerrobert (98-36) and were eliminated from the tournament. 2A Vanguard boys also were eliminated with a first round 96-34 loss to LCBI. Hometown host 3A Shaunavon girls played Assiniboia; their season came to an end with a 68-55 loss. 3A Shaunavon boys lost a heartbreaker to Gravelbourg on a buzzer beating 3 pt shot (65-62) and they didn’t advance.
3A Maple Creek boys had a bye and then won the semifinal vs Gravelbourg (65-51) to advance to the conference final against Moose Jaw Cornerstone. Moose Jaw proved to be a formidable opponent and they beat Maple Creek 83-38, but a second place finish at conferences punched Maple Creek's ticket to the regional tournament.
3A girls Maple Creek won a thrilling semi final over Rosetown (67-66). They played Assiniboia in the conference final, losing 96-43. Like the boys team, second place earns the girls a trip to Regionals.
5A SCCHS boys and girls and 1A Herbert girls did not have a conference level. They all advance to Regionals on March 15-16, along with Maple Creek boys and Maple Creek girls.
WRESTLING
Wrestlers from Gull Lake and Swift Current were in Saskatoon at the SHSAA provincial wrestling tournament this weekend. Each wrestler competes in a classification based on their weight (3kg increments).
Gull Lake School’s lone female entry, Levynn Toney, placed 6th in her first championship. SCCHS’s Dakota Hurl, Eric Shea and Calli Ebner won their last matches to place 5th. Reese Allin, Rylee Bennette and Carter Stad lost in the bronze medal matches to finish 4th. AWESOME result for SCCHS’s Clint Asuzu. He won a BRONZE medal in his weight class. Congratulations, Clint!
SENIOR CURLING
Two SENIOR SWAC curling teams were at SHSAA provincial championship vying for medals.
The Gull Lake boys were the host team at SHSAA provincial curling (Tyler Lamarre, Zach Dysart, Lucas McMillan, Cohen Haithwaite, Trusten Kirwan, coach Amy Dysart). The team opened round robin play with a 7-6 win over Balgonie. Their next game was a loss to Humboldt (7-3) and then dropped their last round robin game to Spiritwood (7-5). That left the Lions in a three way tie for a playoff position, all with records of 1-2. Gull Lake was in the Saturday morning tie break game #1, but bowed out of the championship with a loss to Balgonie. Gull Lake hosted an excellent Provincial championship. Thanks to the school/community for coming together and creating a great experience for teams from across the province.
The Eastend mixed team (Bodie Duke, Makayla Bjornson, Willy Li, Lola Richardson, Slade Bjornson, coach Dana Duke), were in Lampman at the provincial mixed competition. They lost their first game to Lampman (eventual gold medal team) by a score of 7-4. They refocused and won over Tisdale (9-7). Their last round robin game, versus Saskatoon Bethlehem, would decide who advances to the medal rounds. It came down to an extra end, unfortunately Eastend lost 5-4 and did not advance to the medal playoffs.
