White Mud Hockey action heating up for Eatonia Huskies and Leader Flyers

By Jordan Parker

The White Mud Hockey League is in full swing, and the Leader Flyers are trying to find their footing.

They’re coming off a week that left them unable to play.

“We are all excited to be back out on the ice. We had to cancel a few games due to illness and injuries, so it’s nice to see everyone better,” he said.

“We needed the weekend off, and we’re feeling better now. A couple of guys had injuries and had time to heal. We still have a few guys out, but things could be worse.”

The Flyers were 1-1-0 heading into the weekend and looking to change their luck. They lost to Eatonia 5-4 in home-team action.

“We won one and lost one. At our game against Eatonia, we came out a little slow. They got up 2-0, and we were chasing the game to get it back. After we got tied up, it was back-and-forth, but we ended up on the bottom,” he said.

“Honestly, there are things we need to work on. We need to tighten things up, and we need to stay out of the penalty box.”

One major reason, though, that the team has stayed in it is because of their goaltending. Tyler Marotte has seen 11 goals against on a huge amount of shots.

“He’s played great in both games. Tyler has been so good. We need a better defence to help him out; then we’ll have no problem winning,” he said. “If we can cut the goal count down and continue scoring at our pace, we can win.”

While their powerplay and penalty kill has been fantastic, he understands they need to stop putting themselves at a disadvantage.

“The special teams can make or break your game. Our percentages are fantastic, but we need to have more discipline and focus,” he said. “We need to play our game and stay physical.”

Over the weekend, Leader split their contests, losing 4-0 to the Maple Creek Hawks in Maple Creek. They faired better on Saturday, in the battle of the Flyers, coming away with a 6-2 victory over the Frontier Flyers in Frontier.

Eatonia, meanwhile, are back with a vengeance.

Heading into the weekend, they were 2-0-0 and riding a high after some fantastic games. The Huskies winning ways continued with a high scoring affair against the visiting Gull Lake Greyhounds. The final score was 13-9.

Eatonia and Leader will meet up this Friday in Eatonia. Game time is 8:30 pm.
