Sink your pride and play safe in match play when your opponent is in big trouble. That will protect you against the mental anguish of failing to capitalize on a "gift". It will also generally win you the hole.
However, when you're in trouble and your opponent is in good shape, don't be scared of going for broke. You'd probably lose the hole anyway but will have gotten a psychological edge if your "hero" shot comes off.
