Saskatchewan RCMP assisting with high volume of weather-related calls in the province

As the provincial police force, Saskatchewan RCMP has responded to a high volume of weather-related calls over the past two days. Wintry weather including heavy snow, freezing rain and high winds created dangerous road conditions in much of the province.

From midnight on November 16 to 9:00 am on November 17, Saskatchewan RCMP’s Divisional Operational Communication Centre dispatched Saskatchewan RCMP officers to 79 motor vehicle collisions. Officers also responded to 28 reports of traffic hazards, including vehicles that were stuck or abandoned.

Locally, Kindersley Fire and Rescue was dispatched to a 6 semi motor vehicle collision just east of Netherhill on Hwy #7. Thankfully no injuries were reported.

Note that officers may have also responded to weather-related calls for service that were reported directly to their detachments or were discovered during regular patrols and are not reflected here.

“Just because the snow has let up a bit doesn’t mean you should be hitting the road just yet,” says Supt. Grant St. Germaine, Officer in Charge of Saskatchewan RCMP’s Traffic Services. “They are still snow-covered and icy in many places due to changing weather conditions, and officers throughout Saskatchewan continue to respond to reports of motor vehicle collisions today.”

Drivers are asked to check road conditions before travelling – and to stay home if travel is not recommended on their route. If you absolutely must travel, ensure you have plenty of gas, a fully charged cell phone, food, water and extra warm clothing packed.
