The Garden Bug: Ashe's Calamint

By Brenda Weaver

Pollinators like the Blue Calamintha Bee rely on this rare wild mint, also known as “Ashe's Savory” or “Ohoopee Wild Basil.” It has only been found in two places: along the Ohoopee River in Georgia and the sand pines and scrub of central Florida. It has gray-green foliage and light Ashe's Calamint pink or pale purple blossoms. It is one of many plants named after William Ashe (1872-1932), who was a pioneer forester of the United States Forest Service.
