The Garden Bug: Growing black pepper
By Brenda Weaver
This plant is native to South India and is widely cultivated in tropical regions around the world. A black pepper plant needs support such as a trellis or staked chicken wire as they grow. Its fruit (called peppercorns) are collected, dried and ground into powder or fine flakes which are used to add flavor and heat to a wide variety of dishes. Black pepper has also been used medicinally for thousands of years and is believed to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and digestive benefits.
