The Garden Bug: Lotus Flower
By Brenda Weaver
The lotus flower was sacred in many ancient cultures as a symbol of blessings and the renewal of life. The plants grow in the flood plains of slow-moving rivers and deltas, and can drop many seeds every year.
While some seeds sprout quickly or are eaten by wildlife, the remaining seeds can stay dormant a long time within the sediment, even if it dries out completely. When water levels are renewed, the dormant seeds spring to life from the sediment and put on a magnificent display.
