Only a relatively small number of plants are responsible for the allergies of millions of people in North America every year. Listed below are some of the "pollen factories" most likely to cause itching, sneezing, watery eyes, coughing, nasal discharge and headaches.

  • Ragweed: throughout North America

  • Mountain cedar: Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas

  • Ryegrass: throughout North America

  • Maple: throughout North America

  • Elm: throughout most of North America

  • Mulberry: throughout the United States

  • Pecan: Southern states in the U.S.

  • Oak: throughout North America
