The Garden Bug: The lotus flower

By Brenda Weaver

The lotus plant can grow as tall as 6 feet in lakes and large ponds, while miniature varieties grow happily in a free-standing bowl on your patio. It needs 6 hours of direct sunlight each day in order to flower. Do not place it in flowing water or in a fountain; if it is grown in a pot or bowl, do not allow it to freeze. The lotus has been used for millenia as a symbol of beauty, resilience, and transformation in architectural motifs, artwork, textiles and religious settings.
