Here Kitty, Kitty!

Huge snow cat seen in resident’s yard

If you happen to cruise down King Drive in Kindersley, you’ll spot the biggest cat you’ve ever seen in their front yard. It’s a cat sculpted out of snow and is accompanied by a snowman and giant letters. The sculptor is Bernie Vold, owner of the property on King Drive.

Bernie has been creating snow sculptures since he was young. “I grew up in Alsask where we had a festival, and individual teams would build a sculpture,” he said. “I love to draw and love building stuff.”

He brushed up on his sculpting skills once again when his kids were young, and now, in 2023, he’s back at it again. “We had so much snow this year ... I figured why not,” he reasoned.

His creations are very detailed, from the handcrafted snow buttons sported by the snowman to the stripes on the cat, along with bright green eyes. Bernie estimated it took him approximately five hours to complete the cat and an additional two hours for the snowman.

“The sunshine gives them a beating; I’ll have to repair them when it cools down,” he said. He wants to keep them looking their best for all the spectators who come take a look.

“The kids enjoy it, and we even get the handi bus driving by at night to show the passengers, which is kind of cool,” he said.
